Why Is Individual Support Important in Social Work?

September 2, 2011 | Quebec

An Approach Tailored to Each Person

Every person has their own history, experiences, and needs. Two situations that may appear similar can be shaped by very different personal, family, social, or environmental factors. In social work, individual support enables a better understanding of these circumstances and contributes to an approach tailored to each person.

This approach helps build a relationship based on listening, respect, and collaboration while taking into account each person's goals, needs, and available resources.

These skills are developed in CDI College's Social Service Intervention – JWW.0V program, where you will learn to analyze situations, build helping relationships, collaborate with different partners, and contribute to appropriate interventions with individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Taking the Time to Understand the Person

Individual support begins with a clear understanding of the person's circumstances.

Social Services Workers gather information, consider different factors, and communicate with the person to better understand their circumstances, needs, strengths, and available resources.

This process helps provide support that reflects each person's situation.

Building a Relationship of Trust

Individual support depends first and foremost on the quality of the relationship.

Listening, respect, openness, and appropriate communication help create an environment in which meaningful conversations can take place, and the person can actively participate.

This relationship is an important foundation of social work.

Supporting Independence

Individual support is designed to help people move forward in ways that reflect their own circumstances.

Social Services Workers help identify and build on a person's strengths, abilities, and resources so they can actively participate in decisions and processes that affect them.

This approach supports greater independence while respecting each person's circumstances and pace.

Connecting People With Appropriate Resources

Depending on the needs identified, different resources may support a person's progress.

Social Services Workers collaborate with community organizations, healthcare facilities, social services, and other partners to help people access appropriate resources.

This collaboration contributes to coordinated support that reflects the person's identified needs.

Adapting as a Person's Needs Change

A person's needs can change over time.

Individual support, therefore, requires adapting the approach as circumstances change, goals evolve, and new needs emerge.

This flexibility helps keep the support relevant while respecting the person's individual circumstances.

Training for the Realities of the Field

CDI College's Social Service Intervention – JWW.0V program helps you develop skills in helping relationships, communication, needs assessment, and collaboration with different partners.

Through hands-on training and three practicums totalling 690 hours, you will have opportunities to apply what you learn in settings that reflect the realities of social work while progressively developing the skills needed to provide individual support.

A Person-Centred Approach

Individual support plays an important role in social work because it takes each person's unique circumstances into account.

By building relationships based on listening, understanding, and collaboration, Social Services Workers can contribute to support that promotes greater independence and well-being.
