Why Are Community Resources Essential in Social Work?

July 12, 2012 | Quebec

Partners That Support the Well-Being of People and Communities

Individuals, families, and communities may need different types of support depending on their circumstances. No single organization or professional can address every need. This is why community resources play such an important role in social work.

Community organizations, healthcare facilities, social services, and other partners each contribute in different ways to supporting people and helping them access appropriate services. Collaboration among these resources can provide a more coordinated response to the circumstances people face.

These skills are developed in CDI College's Social Service Intervention – JWW.0V program, where you will learn to analyze situations, identify community resources, collaborate with different partners, and contribute to appropriate interventions with individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Knowing What Resources Are Available

Every community has resources designed to address specific needs.

Social Services Workers develop knowledge of the organizations, services, and partners available in their communities so they can help connect people with resources that reflect their needs.

Knowing what resources are available is an important part of providing effective support.

Helping People Access Services

People may not always know what resources are available to support them.

Social Services Workers can help people access services by providing information about available resources and, when appropriate, connecting them with organizations or partners that can address their needs.

This process can help maintain continuity throughout the support process.

Encouraging Collaboration Among Partners

Community resources often complement one another.

Social Services Workers collaborate with different organizations, institutions, and professionals to encourage a coordinated approach that reflects people's needs.

This collaboration brings together different areas of expertise and available resources.

Supporting People Throughout the Process

Community resources can contribute at different stages of the support process.

Depending on the needs identified, they may provide support, activities, specialized services, or other forms of assistance that complement the work being done with an individual, family, or group.

Drawing on complementary resources can help provide support that better reflects people's circumstances.

Keeping Up With Changing Resources and Needs

The needs of communities evolve.

New resources may become available, existing services can change, and social realities continue to evolve.

Social Services Workers, therefore, need to stay familiar with available resources so they can contribute effectively to the support process.
