Supporting People During Mealtimes

March 11, 2014 | Quebec

Much More Than a Time to Eat

Mealtimes are an important part of everyday life. They not only help meet people's nutritional needs but also provide opportunities for enjoyment, social interaction, and the maintenance of familiar routines.

When someone has difficulty eating independently, appropriate assistance can help support their well-being, safety, and quality of life.

Mealtime assistance is an important part of CDI College's Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions – 5905 DVS program, where students develop the skills needed to assist people with different activities of daily living, including during meals.

Encouraging Independence Whenever Possible

Every person has different abilities.

Patient Service Associates, Orderlies, and home health and social services aides encourage people to participate in mealtimes according to their abilities while providing only the assistance they need.

This approach can help people maintain their independence and confidence in their own abilities.

Supporting Comfort and Safety

Several factors can affect a person's comfort and safety before and during a meal.

Proper positioning, physical comfort, and respecting the person's pace can help make mealtimes safer and more enjoyable.

Patient Service Associates remain attentive to these factors so they can adapt their assistance to each situation.

Respecting Routines and Preferences

Mealtimes are often connected to routines and preferences that are important to people.

Whenever circumstances allow, Patient Service Associates take the person's preferences, routines, and pace into account to help make mealtimes as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

This approach helps preserve dignity and support quality of life.

Skills Developed During Training

CDI College's Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions – 5905 DVS program prepares students to assist people during mealtimes using safe practices adapted to their needs.

Through courses, hands-on labs, and practicums, students learn to encourage participation, support people's comfort, and provide professional assistance in a variety of everyday situations.

This preparation helps them contribute to people's well-being in different health and social services settings.

A Part of the Day That Supports Quality of Life

Supporting someone during a meal goes far beyond assisting with eating.

It also means encouraging independence, respecting routines and preferences, supporting comfort, and helping make mealtimes safe and enjoyable.

Through their presence and assistance, Patient Service Associates contribute to the everyday well-being of the people they support.
