Everyday Activities That Support Independence
Activities of daily living include the essential tasks people perform every day, such as getting out of bed, washing, dressing, moving around, eating, and maintaining personal hygiene. When illness, injury, physical limitations, or a loss of independence make some of these activities more difficult, appropriate assistance can play an important role.
Patient Service Associates or Orderlies help people with these everyday activities while encouraging independence and supporting their quality of life.
Activities of daily living are an important part of CDI College's Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions – 5905 DVS program, where students develop the skills needed to assist people with essential everyday activities.
Providing Support Without Taking Over
The goal of assistance is not to do everything for someone when they are still able to participate.
Patient Service Associates consider each person's abilities to provide the appropriate level of assistance while encouraging participation in activities the person can still perform.
This approach helps people maintain their abilities while supporting their independence.
Adapting Assistance to Each Person
Needs vary depending on a person's age, health, daily routines, and abilities.
Patient Service Associates adapt their approach to provide personalized assistance with different activities of daily living while respecting each person's pace and preferences.
This approach helps preserve dignity and support well-being.

Through courses, hands-on labs, and practicums, students learn to adapt their approach, use safe work practices, and encourage people to participate while respecting their dignity.
This preparation helps them develop the professionalism needed to work in a variety of health and social services settings.
