Human Resources Administration

In any successful business, the most valuable commodity is people. Our Human Resources Administration diploma program prepares students to work as human resources assistants and officers so that they can help manage this essential asset.

 

Human resources administrators are needed in every kind of business, across every area of specialization. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to begin a career as a Human Resources Assistant or Officer, while also being qualified to work in general office administration.

 

Program Courses

SSS4 - Student Success Strategies
This course will introduce students to skills and concepts that will help them achieve personal, academic, and career success.
MOT4 - Microsoft Outlook
This course presents the MS Outlook application interface, tools, and features. You will l earn about the fundamentals of an e-mail application, scheduling, calendars, contact lists, creating, forwarding and managing messages. This course relies heavily upon hands-on practical activities that allow you to learn concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
MSW4 - Microsoft Word
This course introduces the students to word processing with Microsoft Word. Relying heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. Learners will focus on the core features of Microsoft Word such as proper document formatting, organization and editing using the tools and features of the ribbon. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as working with tables, lists, objects, templates footnotes and endnotes and mail merges. Students will explore the collaboration features that allow users to share and collaborate on documents through the use of track changes, sharing and reviewing.
MSE4 - Microsoft Excel

This course introduces the students to spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of spreadsheets and how to use the common features and functions of Microsoft Excel. The course then focuses on the core features of Microsoft Excel where students learn how to enter and format data and use the various functions and formulas to manage and manipulate the data. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as performing quantitative analysis with logical, lookup and various mathematical and financial functions. Depicting data visually is an important feature of Excel. Students will learn how to work with charts in Excel to produce a variety of different charts based on data housed in a spreadsheet. Finally students will learn to handle large volumes of data with DataSets and tables.

MSP4 - Microsoft PowerPoint

This course introduces the students to presentation development and design with Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 where you will learn about the common views, features, tools and the environment of PowerPoint. The course then focuses on the core processes of development and design of robust PowerPoint presentations and enhancing the presentations with the rich media tools offered by PowerPoint. Students will learn to use the PowerPoint templates, outlines and themes to design the presentation and then populate the slides with the various content items such as images, shapes, WordArt, SmartArt transitions and other enhancements.

BEP4 - Business English and Proofreading
In this course, students will develop essential English skills through review and application of basic grammar and punctuation principles necessary for successful workplace communication. Students will also learn to proofread business communication as a three-step process that includes reviewing copy once for format, once for content and mechanical errors, and once for references and numerical text. Throughout the process, students will learn and apply standard proofreading symbols.
EBW4 - Effective Business Writing

The workplace of the twenty-first century demands excellent communications skills. The focus of this course is on learning writing techniques that ensure effective business communication. Achieve an effective style by using precise verbs, concrete nouns, and vivid adjectives; write memorandums and e-mail messages that deliver information and make requests; write letters and memorandums that request information concisely and promote goodwill; apply skillful writing techniques in refusing requests; compose carefully planned sales letters; write letters of appreciation, congratulation, sympathy, recommendation, and introduction; write effective formal and informal reports; write a formal report including data, using tables, charts, and graphs.

OSK4 - Office Skills

The daily routines of a modern business office are examined, and the skills necessary to assist in the smooth operation of the office are presented in this course. A variety of presentation methods may be used including lecture, discussion, role plays, case studies and work simulations.

B1075R - Customer Relations and Interpersonal Skills
In business, as in other interpersonal contact, the impression formed in the first 10 to 15 seconds is crucial to the success of the relationship. The importance of the customer and of customer relations to business success is examined through case studies and role-playing. Students will learn relevant theories of human behaviour and how they may be applied to improve customer relations.
H1004 - Organizational Behaviour

This course explores the basics of organizational life, including the relationship between organizational form, the individuals who work in it, and the structures of performance. Key components will be the understanding of power, ethics, leadership, and management within organizational life. Individual and team performance will be evaluated and aspects of human psychology and values assessed. Theories of motivation and leadership will be identified and the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to organizational control explored.

H1104 - Introduction to Human Resources

This module will introduce students to the role of the Human Resources officer and assistant, the expectations placed on the Human Resources department, and the ethical and legal issues relevant to Human Resources. In this course, you will learn the aspects of effective management of human resources in today’s business environment. The strategic role and importance of human resources management is explored with emphasis on employment law, job design, planning, recruitment and selection. Employee training is also covered as well as performance management and appraisal.

H1204 - Leadership and Change

This module will give students the skills and knowledge necessary to resolve conflict in the workplace between individuals and between groups of individuals. Skills learned will include negotiation, communication, listening skills, problem-solving, and decision making.

H1304 - Staffing

This module will deal with the role of the Human Resources department in attracting and retaining quality staff. The hiring process will be discussed in detail, and the student will learn how to manage excess or shortage of staff.

H1404 - Compensation and Benefits

An organization’s compensation system can have a major impact on its success, but the most effective compensation system may be very different from one organization to the next and may even differ over time for the same organization. However, if there is no single compensation system that fits all organizations, this makes life very complicated for those who manage organizations. This course explores a systematic framework for identifying and designing the compensation system that will add the most value to the organization.

H1504 - Training and Development

This module helps students understand the role and importance of training and development within an organization. Skills taught include needs analyses, designing a training program, conducting performance appraisals, and working within an existing training and development framework to maximize staff training potential. 

H1604 - Labour Relations

This module covers union history, managing in a union environment, the Human Resources Code, union relations, collective bargaining, and recent developments in labour relations. 

H1704 - Employment Legislation

This course deals with common law legal principles and statutes that govern the employment relationship. Students will explore issues relating to employment law and the employment relationship from the perspective of managers, employees and human resource professionals. The course will provide an essential understanding of basic Canadian law: our legal system, contracts and torts as they relate to employment law. There will also be detailed study of those areas of law that relate directly to the employment situation: human rights, privacy, employment standards legislation, occupational health and safety and termination of employment. These topics will be discussed in relation to the hiring process, rights and obligations during the period of employment and termination and postemployment considerations.

H1800 - Privacy and Confidentiality

The purpose of this course is to prepare students for the contemporary Canadian workplace with regards to organizational obligations around the use, collection and disclosure of personal information. This module will provide the student with an overview of the applicable privacy and confidentiality legislation with a focus on how it applies to a Human Resources department. Students will gain an insight into the various acts and legislation that govern privacy and confidentiality at both a provincial and federal level.

HRA2000 - Practicum

This module is for course credits but has no grade.  Students will be placed in actual workplaces related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee for the five weeks in order to gain the valuable real-world experience that so many employers seek.  Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory.

CES4 - Career & Employment Strategies

This course looks at the planning, preparation, execution, and follow-up stages of an interview: how people find jobs; employer expectations; presenting an enthusiastic attitude; focusing on the right job; transferable skills; the job interview; effective resume preparation; cover and thank you letters; effective telemarketing; tapping the hidden job market; handling objections; job search management; self-confidence and self-esteem building; mock interviews (video-taped); and individual counselling and coaching.
