In this course, the student starts learning some basic skills to develop the four language skills delimited by communication situations. At the end of the course, whether oral or written, the student uses appropriate vocabulary and syntax in memorized statements. When speaking, the student is able to understand simple instructions, give basic personal information and ask simple questions related to identity. He is introduced to elements of phonetics. He uses memorized statements to greet and thank, while resorting to compensation strategies as needed. Communication situations lead him or her to interact.
In this course, the student is required to broaden his or her basic knowledge of French to develop the four language skills defined by communication situations. The development of oral comprehension and production continues in this course without minimizing the importance of written comprehension and production skills. When speaking, the student is able to understand common keywords and phrases in simple and brief conversations, to understand information and simple guidelines. He or she is more familiar with phonetic elements. He or she may produce short sentences to ask for or give information on the location or operation of the class. He or she communicates in short interactions lasting 3 minutes.
In this course, the student is required to broaden his or her basic knowledge of French to develop the four language skills defined by communication situations. When speaking, the learner is able to understand, for example, requests for help or permission, an invitation, compliments or instructions and he or she makes short sentences to introduce himself or herself, inquire, provide information, describe a problem, invite someone or compliment a person. Some communication situations cause him or her to interact. These interactions can be 4 minutes long.
In this course, the student is required to deepen his or her basic knowledge of French to develop the four language skills delimited by communication situations. When speaking, the student is able to understand and produce expressive, informative, injunctive or narrative discourses. He or she understands, for example, guidelines, diagnoses, telephone messages or news items. He or she expresses himself or herself in syntactically correct short sentences to describe, among other things, a health problem, or to justify a delay or absence, or to express needs or preferences. Some communication situations cause him or her to interact. These interactions can be 5 minutes long.
This first intermediate course allows the student to make a transition from the introductory level in a progressive way. Learning is increasingly oriented towards a fine understanding of the mechanisms of oral and written language, including the understanding of metalanguage. The student further mobilizes his or her language skills in the context of oral and written exchanges. When speaking, the student is able to understand and produce discourses of a descriptive, expressive, informative, injunctive or narrative nature. He or she can understand, for example, a weather or traffic report on the radio, and is able to follow the general plot of a film or the general course of conversations related to the intentions of communication. He or she can express himself or herself using linked or coordinated sentences that are syntactically correct to communicate information interactively. He or she can formulate congratulations. He or she can produce a voicemail message. He or she can interact over the telephone or in person for making a medical appointment, resolving a school problem, or requesting information. These formal or informal interactions can be 6 minutes long.
In this course, the student improves his or her ability to participate in oral and written exchanges. Learning is increasingly oriented towards a fine understanding of the mechanisms of oral and written language. When speaking, the student is able to understand and produce discourse of a descriptive, expressive, informative, injunctive or narrative nature. He or she can understand, for example, the conduct of a film, the content of simple conversations related to the intentions of communication, practical columns, interviews, or documentaries on common or practical themes. He or she can express himself or herself using syntactically correct phrases, which are sometimes complex, to communicate information interactively. He or she shares personal experiences in formal or informal conversations in different contexts and speaks to describe in detail the physical characteristics of a person. These interactions, whatever their nature, can be 7 minutes long.
This course allows the student to become functional in increasingly complex communication situations and contexts, while acquiring a fine understanding of the mechanisms of oral and written language. When speaking, the student is able to understand and produce discourses of descriptive, expressive, informative or narrative nature. He or she can understand, for example, an oral presentation, the content of simple conversations on specific themes, implicit advertising, news stories, columns and documentaries on practical or current themes. He or she can express himself or herself using syntactically correct sentences that are sometimes complex and can also communicate independently. He or she can hold conversations about, for example, current affairs, negotiations or claims. These interactions can be 8 minutes long. He or she is asked to give a 10 minute presentation on a specific topic.
The last course intermediate level course allows the student to become functional in increasingly complex communication situations and contexts while acquiring a fine understanding of the mechanisms of oral and written language. When speaking, the student is able to understand and produce discourses of an argumentative, descriptive, expressive, informative or narrative nature. He or she can understand, for example, a point of view on current affairs, television series, soap operas, reports or documentaries on topics of general interest, the content of most conversations in formal and informal contexts and detailed information on professional tasks. He or she can express himself or herself using complex and syntactically correct complex sentence structures to communicate information independently. He or she participates in exchanges of views and in a selection interview. He or she intervenes in a discussion on current events or in a meeting focused on decision-making. The formal or informal interactions are approximately 10 minutes long.
The aim of the last course of the program is to prepare the student for the examination of the diploma in French language TEF-B2 of the French Ministry of Education. It focuses on the four communication skills: oral comprehension, written comprehension, written production, and oral production and interaction.
