Across Canada, campuses pitch in to help
Vancouver, BC - January 9, 2018 - Across Canada, from November 20 to December 15, CDI College campuses collected non-perishable items for local food banks, bringing in more than 5,100 items across our 25 campuses.
“It’s great to see our staff and students truly embracing the holiday spirit with their generous donations,” said Andre Souza, VP of Operations at CDI College. “At this time of year, anything helps, and we’re very proud of the CDI College community today.”
For every item donated, CDI College also matched with a monetary donation to Food Banks Canada.
Every month, more than 863,000 Canadians turn to food banks to get access to fresh, safe, quality food, with a further 13 percent of Canadians living in a state of food insecurity. Food Banks in Canada are constantly under pressure to ensure donations are coming in to cover their client base, which increased by 1.3 percent in 2016.
People who use food banks come from all walks of life: families with children, seniors, people with disabilities, the working poor, and individuals on social assistance.
“Our goal is changing lives with education, so we see this as an extension of our goals as a school,” Souza said, “And without proper nutrition, it’s much more difficult to learn and focus. The generosity of the CDI College community in helping its neighbours during the holiday season makes us very proud.”
If you’re thinking of donating to your local food bank, these items are most in-demand:
- Canned goods, including meat, fish, soups, fruits, vegetables and beans.
- Meat alternatives
- Whole grain cereals
- Baby foods
- Pasta and pasta sauces
- Household and personal hygiene items
- Financial donations to help food banks buy fresh foods, including milk, proteins, and produce.
