Supporting People Living With Physical Limitations

November 22, 2013 | Quebec

Assistance Adapted to Each Person's Abilities

Physical limitations can have many causes. They may result from illness, injury, surgery, a disability, or aging. Depending on the circumstances, they may be temporary or permanent and can affect a person's ability to perform certain activities of daily living.

Patient Service Associates or Orderlies play an important role in supporting people with physical limitations by providing assistance adapted to their needs while helping them maintain their existing abilities.

Supporting people with different physical abilities is an important part of CDI College's Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions – 5905 DVS program, where students develop the skills needed to assist different populations while respecting their independence, dignity, and quality of life.

Supporting Independence Despite Physical Limitations

Having a physical limitation does not mean that a person can no longer participate in activities of daily living.

Patient Service Associates encourage people to perform the tasks they are still able to do, based on their abilities and condition.

This approach helps people maintain their independence and confidence in their own abilities.

Adapting Assistance to Individual Needs

Every physical limitation affects people differently.

Patient Service Associates adapt their approach based on the person's abilities, the equipment being used, and the setting in which assistance is provided.

This adaptability helps ensure that assistance is safe, respectful, and personalized.

Supporting Comfort and Safety

People living with physical limitations may need assistance with mobility, positioning, or certain everyday activities.

Patient Service Associates provide this assistance with a focus on comfort while adhering to safe work practices to reduce the risk of injury.

Their support can help create an environment that feels safe and responds to each person's individual needs.

Skills Developed During Training

CDI College's Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions – 5905 DVS program prepares students to support people with a variety of physical limitations.

Through courses, hands-on labs, and practicums, students learn to adapt their approach, use appropriate work methods, and provide assistance that respects each person's abilities and needs.

This training prepares them to work in a variety of settings throughout the health and social services network.

A Profession That Focuses on People's Abilities

Patient Service Associates do not define people by their physical limitations.

Instead, they recognize the abilities each person retains and provide assistance that helps support their independence, comfort, and quality of life.

This person-centred approach helps ensure that assistance is provided with respect, compassion, and professionalism.
