HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: The Languages at the Heart of Web Development

June 7, 2012 | Quebec

Understanding How These Technologies Work Together in Website Design and Development

Behind every website are technologies that structure its content, define its appearance, and enable interactions. Among the best-known, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript play important roles in web development.

However, each technology serves a different purpose. HTML is primarily used to structure a page's content, CSS defines its presentation, and JavaScript adds behaviours and interactions.

In CDI College's Web Design – LCA.C0 program, these technologies are covered in several courses focusing on website design and development, interactive content, and scripting languages.

HTML: Structuring the Content of a Web Page

HTML is used to organize the different elements of a web page. Headings, paragraphs, hyperlinks, images, tables, forms, and multimedia content can all be incorporated into a structure that a browser can interpret.

In the program, students learn about the basic structure of an HTML file, tags and attributes, and how to organize information hierarchically.

CSS: Defining the Presentation

While HTML defines the structure of a page, CSS defines its presentation. Style sheets determine the appearance and layout of different HTML elements.

CSS, therefore, plays an important role in page layout and the visual consistency of a website. It can also be used to create certain transitions and animations.

JavaScript: Adding Behaviours and Interactions

JavaScript can add behaviours to a web page and make certain elements respond to events.

The program covers concepts such as events, functions, variables, conditions, loops, objects, and arrays. JavaScript is also used to create transitions, animations, and other forms of interactive content.

Three Technologies With Complementary Roles

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are not interchangeable. Each has a distinct purpose: HTML structures content, CSS defines its presentation, and JavaScript adds behaviours and interactivity.

Used together, they bring structure, presentation, and interaction to a web page.

Creating Interactive Content

Interactivity allows a page to respond to a user's actions. As part of the program, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript are used to create transitions and animations involving images and objects.

Students build on these skills with other technologies covered in courses focusing on interactive content and scripting languages.

Adapting Web Pages to Different Screens

HTML and CSS are also used to create pages for different screen sizes.

The program covers concepts such as breakpoints, media queries, responsive design, and the mobile-first approach, helping students understand how a page's presentation can adapt to different screens.

Skills That Are Part of a Broader Education

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are only part of what students learn in the Web Design – LCA.C0 program. The training also covers user interface design, layout, programming, databases, data processing, and server-side technologies.

Together, these areas of study help students understand the visual, technical, and interactive aspects involved in designing and developing websites.
