How Can You Build Confidence During Your Training?

Building Confidence While Studying: Learning to Work Through Doubts

Starting a training program, learning new concepts, or developing new skills can sometimes bring doubts. Will I succeed? Am I capable of learning this material? Will I feel confident enough when it is time to put my knowledge into practice?

Confidence does not mean knowing everything or getting everything right the first time. It can develop gradually as you learn, practise, and see the progress you are making. Here are a few ways to build that confidence throughout your training.

Recognize How Far You've Come

When you are constantly focused on what you still need to learn, it can be easy to overlook everything you already know.

Every so often, take some time to compare what you know now with what you knew at the beginning of your training. Has a task that required a great deal of effort a few weeks ago become easier? Do you now understand concepts that initially seemed complicated? Are you becoming more comfortable using certain tools or methods?

Recognizing your progress gives you concrete evidence that your skills are developing.

This can be particularly important when returning to school, as some people need time to rediscover their bearings and study habits. CDI College explores this experience in another article specifically about rebuilding confidence in your academic abilities.

Accept That You Won't Master Everything Right Away

The purpose of training is precisely to learn things you do not yet know how to do. Struggling with a new concept or having to try an exercise again does not mean you cannot succeed.

Some skills take time and practice before they begin to feel more natural.

Instead of focusing only on the result, it can be helpful to ask yourself: What did this difficulty help me understand, and what could I do differently next time?

A mistake can then become useful information that helps you continue learning.

Ask Questions

It can be tempting to think that confidence means being able to figure everything out on your own. However, recognizing that something is unclear and asking a question is also part of the learning process.

Asking for clarification, checking your understanding, or seeking additional explanation can prevent misunderstandings from building up.

It can also help you gradually become more independent. The better you understand what you are doing and why, the easier it can become to move forward with confidence.

Put Theory Into Practice

Understanding a concept is one thing. Being able to use it is another.

Exercises, simulations, projects, and other hands-on activities allow you to see what you can actually do. Each new accomplishment can help make your knowledge more concrete and make you more comfortable applying it.

Practice can gradually turn knowledge into skills you can use.

This progression can take on another dimension when a program includes a practicum in a professional setting. Students may then have opportunities to apply some of what they have learned in a new environment and discover the realities of their future field.

Learn How to Use Feedback

Receiving comments on an assignment or exercise can sometimes be difficult, particularly when you have put a lot of effort into it. However, feedback can be a valuable tool for improvement when it helps you recognize your strengths and identify areas for further development. Quebec educational resources also highlight the role feedback can play in students' learning, independence, and progress.

Instead of viewing every correction as a judgment of your abilities, try to identify what you can learn from it.

What did I do well? What do I need to improve? What strategy could I try next time?

Learning how to use feedback can gradually help you assess your own work more effectively and identify the next steps in your learning.

Participate and Collaborate

Confidence can also develop through interactions with others. Speaking up, explaining your reasoning, presenting an idea, or participating in a team project gives you opportunities to put your knowledge to the test.

Working with other students can also help you see that everyone has their own strengths and faces their own challenges. Educational research also suggests that, under the right conditions, peer interaction and feedback can contribute to learning.

You do not need to be the person who talks the most or always takes the lead. The goal is to participate progressively, share your ideas, and learn how to collaborate with different people.

Set Achievable Goals

A very ambitious goal can feel overwhelming when you look at it as a whole. Breaking it down into smaller steps makes your progress easier to see.

Instead of trying to master an entire subject immediately, you can focus on one concept at a time. Rather than expecting yourself to feel completely comfortable speaking in front of a group, you might start by asking a question or presenting a small part of a project.

Each step you complete gives you a new starting point for the next one.

Confidence Develops Gradually

Building confidence during your training does not mean eliminating every doubt. It means learning to keep moving forward despite some uncertainty by drawing on the skills you are developing and the progress you are making.

As you learn, practise, complete projects, and gain new experiences during your training, what once seemed unfamiliar can become more familiar. What seemed difficult can become more manageable.

Confidence can then grow from something very concrete: realizing that you can do things today that you did not know how to do yesterday.
