Things to do in Surrey
Despite the close proximity to Vancouver, Surrey stands on its own as a bustling metropolis on the southeast shore of the Fraser River. As the second largest city in British Columbia, Surrey offers shopping, arts and cultural events, outdoor recreational opportunities, sporting events, concerts, and much more. Just a quick trip from downtown Vancouver by car or SkyTrain, this accessible city attracts locals and tourists to community events all year-round.
Nicknamed the "City of Parks", the city of Surrey has more than 5680 acres of dedicated parkland. Ride the miniature train or explore the trails and salmon-bearing streams at Bear Creek Park. Wander through the Roseholly Gardens or visit the central water garden at Holland Park. Go fishing at Green Timbers Urban Forest or walk among the towering trees at Redwood Park.
Cyclists love to ride the trails at South Surrey Bike Park while hikers really enjoy a trek on the Semiahmoo Trail. A visit to Crescent Beach isn't complete without a stroll along the Ocean Park Shoreline Walk. Blackie Spit and Mud Bay Park are ideal for bird-watching.
Surrey has something for everyone when it comes to sports and recreation. There are seven major golf courses including the scenic Morgan Creek Golf Course, and Northview Golf and Country Club, host of the PGA tour from 1996 to 2002. Check out a Surrey Eagles hockey game at the South Surrey Arena. Or have a blast at the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds in May.
Catch a play, concert, or performance at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts, the Surrey Arts Centre in Bear Creek Park, or the Surrey Little Theatre. Visit the Surrey Art Gallery to catch some contemporary works by local and international artists or check out the Mikelson Mind and Matter Gallery for unique paintings, soapstone carvings, and wood sculptures.
Surrey also hosts several festivals throughout the year. In April, the Vaisakhi Parade celebrates the Sikh faith and heritage. Spend July 1st at the Cloverdale Amphitheatre, home to Western Canada's largest Canada Day celebration. Celebrate international food and entertainment at the annual Fusion Festival. Meet established authors and learn about up-and-coming writers at the Surrey International Writer's Conference in October.
