• Career & Employment Strategies [CES4]

  • This course looks at the planning, preparation, execution, and follow-up stages of an interview: how people find jobs; employer expectations; presenting an enthusiastic attitude; focusing on the right job; transferable skills; the job interview; effective resume preparation; cover and thank you letters; effective telemarketing; tapping the hidden job market; handling objections; job search management; self-confidence and self-esteem building; mock interviews (video-taped); and individual counselling and coaching.

• Practical Application [PRA4]

  • Students will put oil and gas strategies into practice within an office setting.

• Downstream and Corporate [DOW4]

  • The importance of petroleum and alternative sources to hydrocarbon power are examined. What are hydrocarbons and how do they travel across the country/world?

• Completion and Production [CPL4]

  • This course exposes the student to the process of bringing the oil to the surface and transporting it to a facility to be refined and processed. Students will also explore the Oilsands.

• Drilling [DRI4]

  • Students will be exposed to the following: how to drill a well, how a drilling rig works, what are the requirements of well drilling, what happens when drill operations go into the ocean, how oil and gas is extracted from underground.

• Land and Legal [LLG4]

  • This course teaches the student how to find remote locations by a Legal Land Description, and how to read these special maps. Students also learn about land leases and contracts such as Joint Operating Agreements, and how it is possible to “see” underground with seismic exploration.

• Geology [GEO4]

  • This segment of the program is an introduction to the Oil and Gas industry, starting with an understanding of where oil and gas is found. Students will also be exposed to the history of the industry, and learn about formations, substructures, and reservoir rocks.

• Business English and Proofreading [BEP4]

  • In this course, students will develop essential English skills through review and application of basic grammar and punctuation principles necessary for successful workplace communication. Students will also learn to proofread business communication as a three-step process that includes reviewing copy once for format, once for content and mechanical errors, and once for references and numerical text. Throughout the process, students will learn and apply standard proofreading symbols.

• Executive Office Simulations [EOS4]

  • This course helps prepare students for the real world of office work. It provides a simulated office environment where students can practice the skills learned in previous courses.

• Effective Business Writing [EBW4]

  • The workplace of the twenty-first century demands excellent communications skills. The focus of this course is on learning writing techniques that ensure effective business communication. Achieve an effective style by using precise verbs, concrete nouns, and vivid adjectives; write memorandums and e-mail messages that deliver information and make requests; write letters and memorandums that request information concisely and promote goodwill; apply skillful writing techniques in refusing requests; compose carefully planned sales letters; write letters of appreciation, congratulation, sympathy, recommendation, and introduction; write effective formal and informal reports; write a formal report including data, using tables, charts, and graphs.

• Professional Skills [PSK4]

  • This course is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for dealing effectively with both customers and colleagues in the business world. Using a variety of instructional methods including role-plays, case studies, group exercises, simulated situations, and discussions, students learn and practice customer service and interpersonal skills necessary for success in today’s business environment.

• Microsoft PowerPoint [MSP4]

  • This course introduces the students to presentation development and design with Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 where you will learn about the common views, features, tools and the environment of PowerPoint. The course then focuses on the core processes of development and design of robust PowerPoint presentations and enhancing the presentations with the rich media tools offered by PowerPoint. Students will learn to use the PowerPoint templates, outlines and themes to design the presentation and then populate the slides with the various content items such as images, shapes, WordArt, SmartArt transitions and other enhancements.

• Microsoft Access [MSA4]

  • This course introduces the students to relational databases with Microsoft Access. The course starts with an overview of Microsoft Access and databases in general. Students will learn the fundamental features of relational database and how databases are used to store related information and query the information. After learning how to create and modify a database and work with records, students will learn to sort data and filter to a database. Students will then explore the different ways to query a database and extract the information based on different criteria. Subsequent to working with multi-table databases, students will then learn to work with different types of functions to manipulate data, forms to input data into a database and reports to display data.

• Microsoft Excel [MSE4]

  • This course introduces the students to spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of spreadsheets and how to use the common features and functions of Microsoft Excel. The course then focuses on the core features of Microsoft Excel where students learn how to enter and format data and use the various functions and formulas to manage and manipulate the data. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as performing quantitative analysis with logical, lookup and various mathematical and financial functions. Depicting data visually is an important feature of Excel. Students will learn how to work with charts in Excel to produce a variety of different charts based on data housed in a spreadsheet. Finally students will learn to handle large volumes of data with DataSets and tables.

• Microsoft Word [MSW4]

  • This course introduces the students to word processing with Microsoft Word. Relying heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. Learners will focus on the core features of Microsoft Word such as proper document formatting, organization and editing using the tools and features of the ribbon. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as working with tables, lists, objects, templates footnotes and endnotes and mail merges. Students will explore the collaboration features that allow users to share and collaborate on documents through the use of track changes, sharing and reviewing.

• Microsoft Outlook [MOT4]

  • This course presents the MS Outlook application interface, tools, and features. You will l earn about the fundamentals of an e-mail application, scheduling, calendars, contact lists, creating, forwarding and managing messages. This course relies heavily upon hands-on practical activities that allow you to learn concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.

• Student Success Strategies [SSS4]

  • The purpose of this course is to optimize learning through equipping students with effective study techniques. This course also provides an introduction to personality styles that will be encountered in the workplace and allows students to practise appropriate and productive interaction between the various styles. Emphasis is placed on the types of communication that work best with each style in order to achieve a good working relationship and to manage and resolve conflicts that arise. Students are also introduced to strategies for setting personal goals, managing time, and managing the stress that results from study or work and builds on positive group dynamics and setting expectations for student success.

• Practicum [AB-OGA199]

  • Students will be placed in actual workplaces related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee in order to gain the valuable real-world experience that so many employers seek. Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory.

• Oil & Gas Administration Capstone Project [OGA-CSP]

  • This is the capstone project component of the Oil & Gas Administration program, which is the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills from the classroom portion of the program to practical situations typically encountered in an Oil & Gas work environment. The variety of tasks to perform as part of the capstone project will be aligned to a typical working environment and real life situations.
