How Much Demand Is There for Canadian Tech Workers?

September 20, 2021 | Online

There are many benefits to starting a tech career. You can look forward to working in innovative and exciting areas such as cybersecurity, app development, or web design. You can also expect to find well-paying positions. In fact, the median wage for a network administrator in Canada is $31 per hour, according to the latest Government of Canada figures.

If you’re considering a career in this field, you might be wondering what the employment opportunities are like in Canada – especially in light of the economic disruption the COVID-19 pandemic caused. Here’s some recent data to help you get a picture of the demand for tech workers.

Canadian Employers

Many Canadian employers are scrambling to find qualified tech workers to fill available positions. A new poll from KPMG found almost 80% of businesses are short of skilled professionals, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity and data analytics.

The pandemic clearly provided a catalyst for many businesses to accelerate their digital strategies,” says Armughan Ahmad, President and Managing Partner, Digital at KPMG in Canada. “But implementing these strategies is becoming more difficult, as the competition for digitally-skilled talent is accelerating globally.”

Global Employers

Similarly, many internationally headquartered companies are eager to recruit tech talent. And they’ve got their eyes on graduates based in Canada.

A recent report from the Innovation Economy Council examined how big companies are moving here to take full advantage.

“If their employees can work from nearly anywhere, why not Canada? That’s part of the reason why tech colossuses Google, Facebook, and Amazon have all opened large offices in Canada in the past five years,” the report says.

Remote Work

Tech workers can also look forward to a new era of widespread opportunities to work remotely.

The pandemic has accelerated a trend that was already taking root in the tech industry, namely the shift to distributed workforces,” the Innovation Economy Council report says. “Large and small companies alike now realize that workers can be productive from virtually anywhere with a good internet connection. That could be home, another city, even another country.”

Training Options

With so many employers competing for tech talent here in Canada, it’s a good time to consider training for this exciting and innovative field. CDI College offers a number of online technology programs, which can all be completed in under two years.
