The COVID-19 pandemic has caused people to reevaluate many aspects of their lives – including their desire for pets. Research shows many Canadians recently welcomed new animals into their homes. In a June 2021 survey of 1,500 people across Canada, Abacus Data looked into the phenomenon.

“About 900,000 Canadian adults got a pet since the start of the pandemic who didn’t have one before it – 3% of the population,” says CEO David Coletto.

Veterinarian Shortage

Amid the rise in pet ownership, there is also growing demand for veterinary services. In fact, industry experts have been raising the alarm about a shortage of veterinarians. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association – Society of British Columbia Veterinarians Chapter highlighted the issue in an April 2021 public letter.

“Urban veterinarians are reporting two weeks or longer wait times to get appointments for veterinary care,” the letter says.
