Office Assistant

Students in the Office Assistant program develop the skill sets needed to work in any office environment, big or small. They become proficient with the Microsoft Office suite and learn other related Microsoft business software. Students will develop general business skills and comprehensive bookkeeping skills as part of their general studies. They will also gain hands-on experience with popular accounting software packages.

 
The Office Assistant program preps students for all office administration tasks including creating flow charts, graphs and diagrams. Project management software MS Project is also taught, which will help students to build upon important organizational skills.

Program Courses

CESO - Career and Employment Strategies

In addition to learning career-oriented skills, students learn how to get a job in their chosen profession. Our Employment Services department will assist the graduate in resume writing, as well as preparing for job interviews. Our staff is sensitive to current job market trends and the needs of employers in each local market. Our graduates receive guidance and training to use career tools that help job seekers build a better resume and cover letter, manage an online portfolio, hone interviewing skills, and develop a personal brand online. Students will have the use of a computer lab which has unlimited Internet access, as well as job search resources. Facilitators will also be made available to advise on job finding resources, interview skills and techniques and to carry out mock interviews. This course also looks at the planning, preparation, execution, and follow-up stages of an interview: How people find jobs; Employer expectations; Presenting an enthusiastic attitude; Focusing on the right job and the hidden job market; Transferrable skills; Thank you letters; Effective telemarketing; Handling objections, self-confidence, and self-esteem; Individual counselling and coaching.

PSKO - Professional Skills
This course is designed to equip students with interpersonal skills identified by employers as essential for success in the professional world. Using a variety of instructional methods including case studies, group exercises, and discussion, students learn and practice key communication skills.
PJMO - Project Management
Project Management is of paramount importance to all organizations to improve effectiveness and efficiency. This course utilizes the popular Microsoft Project applications program with realistic case studies and step-by-step guidance.
OSKO - Office Skills
The daily routines of a modern business office are examined, and the skills necessary to assist in the smooth operation of the office are presented in this course. A variety of presentation methods may be used including lecture, discussion, role plays, case studies and work simulations.
EBWO - Effective Business Writing

The workplace of the twenty-first century demands excellent communications skills. The focus of this course is on learning writing techniques that ensure effective business communication: Achieve an effective style by using precise verbs, concrete nouns, and vivid adjective; Write memorandums and e-mail messages that deliver information and make requests; Write letters and memorandums that request information concisely and promote goodwill; Apply skillful writing techniques in refusing requests; Compose carefully planned sales letters; Write letters of appreciation, congratulation, sympathy, recommendation, and introduction; Write effective formal and informal reports ;Write a formal report including data, using tables, charts, and graphs.

SI1O - Computerized Accounting with Sage 50
Students will learn accounting procedures in a computerized environment using the General, Payables, Receivables, modules of Sage 50.
BF1O - Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting I - Level 1
This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles and practices of accounting as a device for reporting business activity. It provides the student with an understanding of the underlying theory and principles of accounting. The construction of financial statements as they evolve from business transactions and records is emphasized using the rules of double-entry bookkeeping. In addition, adjusting journal entries and everyday transactions for both service and retail businesses are recorded coupled with the preparation of basic financial statements. Students will have a clear grasp on the introduction to accounting; financial statements and accounting transactions; analyzing and recording transactions; adjusting accounts for financial statements; and completing the accounting cycle and classifying accounts.
MOXO - Microsoft Outlook
Students work with basic and more advanced features of Microsoft Outlook 2007 to manage messages for efficient communication, maintain personal and business contacts, and organize appointments and tasks.
MAXO - Microsoft Access
This course covers Microsoft Access 2010. This course will present the Microsoft Access application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of a database management system and working with data. You will learn to create and modify databases, add database tables as well as populate the tables with appropriate data. You will learn to create and use relationships between tables and query tables to extract data based on criteria. In addition, you will learn the work with advanced features of the database management system such as creating forms, using controls and producing reports.
MPXO - Microsoft PowerPoint
This course covers Microsoft PowerPoint 2010. This course will present the Microsoft PowerPoint application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of preparing professional quality presentations. You will learn to create presentations, create and edit slides, add and format text, graphics and other types of content to slides. You will then learn to add effects, and transitions to enhance the appearance of your slideshows.
MEXO - Microsoft Excel
This course explores the use of electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel 2007. This course will present the MS Excel application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of spreadsheets, working with data, formatting cells, working with ranges of data and cells as well as applying functions and formulas to manipulate the data in the rows and columns of a spreadsheet. In addition, you will learn how to present tabular data in a variety of different chart formats. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities which allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
MWXO - Microsoft Word
This course will present the MS Word application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of word processing, document, paragraph and character formatting, working with templates, lists and tables. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
KBFOML - Keyboarding
This course gives the student an introduction to the fundamentals of keyboarding. This course will help the students reinforce their English language skills and develop their ability to key and compose information and develop the proper keyboarding techniques and skills. The gradual pace of this course will help the students develop both speed and accuracy while applying the proper keyboarding techniques and position. Students will also develop their proofreading techniques and improve their word processing techniques in a windows environment.
FCMO - Fundamentals of Computers
This course presents an introductory look at Windows 7 and its interface, tools, and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of navigating and personalizing the interface, organizing files and folders, using media devices, and searching for information. This course relies heavily on practical hands-on activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
SSSO - Student Success Strategies

The purpose of this course is to optimize learning through equipping students with effective study techniques. This course also provides an introduction to personality styles that will be encountered in the workplace and allows students to practise appropriate and productive interaction between the various styles. Emphasis is placed on the types of communication that work best with each style in order to achieve a good working relationship and to manage and resolve conflicts that arise. Students are also introduced to strategies for setting personal goals, managing time, and managing the stress that results from study or work and builds on positive group dynamics and setting expectations for student success
