Legal administrative assistants are essential to any legal team. In order to succeed in this fast-paced and fascinating career, you'll need a strong education in the policy and procedures of modern law offices, as well as an understanding of the Canadian legal and court system.
CDI College's Legal Administrative Assistant program will teach you legal terminology, court systems, office procedures, legal record-keeping, and bookkeeping. Students will also build strong transcription and keyboarding skills and become adept at using common office software such as MS Word and Excel. Course material in this program will include wills and estates, real estate, corporate and commercial law, civil litigation, and family law.

This course explores the configuration and administration of common Cisco network devices. Students will learn about layered internetwork communication, protocols and standards and how to plan and design Internetwork This course will allow the students to work with the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) in a simulated environment. This course introduces the students to word processing with Microsoft Word 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills-based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of Microsoft Office 2016 where you will learn about the common features of the Office applications and file management fundamentals. The course then focuses on the core features of Microsoft Word where students learn proper document formatting, organization and editing using the tools and features of the ribbon. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as working with tables, lists, objects, templates footnotes and endnotes and mail merges. Finally, the course will explore the collaboration features of Word 2013 that allow users to share and collaborate on documents through the use of track changes, sharing and reviewing and the use of SkyDrive.
This course introduces the students to spreadsheets with Microsoft Excel 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of spreadsheets and how to use the common features and functions of Microsoft Excel. The course then focuses on the core features of Microsoft Excel where students learn how to enter and format data and use the various functions and formulas to manage and manipulate the data. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as performing quantitative analysis with logical, lookup and various mathematical and financial functions. Depicting data visually is an important feature of Excel. Students will learn how to work with charts in Excel to produce a variety of different charts based on data housed in a spreadsheet. Finally students will learn to handle large volumes of data with Datasets and tables.
This course explores information management using Microsoft Outlook 2013. It will present the Microsoft Outlook application interface, tools, and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of an e-mail application including scheduling and calendars; contact lists; and creating, forwarding, and managing messages. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.ACC
In this course, students will develop essential English skills through review and application of basic grammar and punctuation principles necessary for successful workplace communication. Students will also learn to proofread business communication as a three-step process that includes reviewing copy once for format, once for content and mechanical errors, and once for references and numerical text. Throughout the process, students will learn and apply standard proofreading symbols.
The workplace of the twenty-first century demands excellent communications skills. The focus of this course is on learning writing techniques that ensure effective business communication. Achieve an effective style by using precise verbs, concrete nouns, and vivid adjectives; write memorandums and e-mail messages that deliver information and make requests; write letters and memorandums that request information concisely and promote goodwill; apply skillful writing techniques in refusing requests; compose carefully planned sales letters; write letters of appreciation, congratulation, sympathy, recommendation, and introduction; write effective formal and informal reports; write a formal report including data, using tables, charts, and graphs.
This course gives the student an introduction to the fundamentals of keyboarding. This course will help the students reinforce their English language skills and develop their ability to key and compose information, develop the proper keyboarding techniques and skills, The gradual pace of this course will help the students develop both speed and accuracy while applying the proper keyboarding techniques and position. Students will also develop their proofreading techniques, and improve their word processing techniques in a windows environment.
This course introduces the student to the law office environment and the day-to-day procedures affecting all support staff. The effective operation of a transcription system is also covered and students gain an awareness of the practical skills necessary to be a competent legal administrative assistant.
This course will provide students with an introduction to legal software and utilities that are used in the Legal Offices. The course will cover a variety of software tools with a focus on PC Law and Quicklaw. This introductory course will provide the students with the basic level skills on the software covered with the aim of integrating these skills throughout the program.
An overview of the legal principles governing the making of a will; the terminology used in wills; preparation and execution of the will; testacy and intestacy; and obtaining letters and administering the estate.
This course focuses on the acquisition, sale, and mortgaging of residential property and all related documentation as well as the role of the legal administrative assistant when representing a purchaser or vendor.
This course serves as an introduction to the court system within the province and examines the basic rules of the court. The course also examines the processing of a civil action from the originating process to the Bill of Costs. The procedural steps of applications and the procedural steps of motion proceedings are covered as well.
This course provides an overview of the legal principles governing the drafting, preparation and execution of domestic contracts, and the processing of all types of divorce proceedings as well as familiarization with family law proceedings.
Criminal Law is an introduction to both the theoretical and practical aspects of Criminal Law in Canada. Students will explore the major offences under the Criminal Code and will review important landmark decisions on Criminal Law cases. This module will introduce students to terminology and procedures pertaining to criminal litigation, the Court of Queen’s Bench Criminal Rules, and Appeal Court and Supreme Court of Canada procedures. Students will also become familiar with some of the documents involved in this area of law should they wish to assist a criminal defence lawyer or crown prosecutor. The course will focus on three areas: criminal theory and the essence of criminal law, arrest and bail procedures, and trials and appeals.
This course introduces the various forms of business ownership, steps required to incorporate, basic legal procedures, and documents associated with buying and selling business assets along with the registration of a security interest in person.
This is the final legal course of the Legal Administrative Assistant program and represents a comprehensive review of all previous legal courses. This review helps students appreciate the intertwining nature and degree of overlap between the various areas of law.
Students are required to complete a total of 140 hours of outside work experience. This is a non-payment work experience.
This course builds on the skills learned in the Student Success Strategies course or its equivalent. It provides information on how to use the communication skills learned in order to make a successful presentation to a prospective employer. Students also learn how to uncover the hidden job market and identify employment opportunities. Self-assessment during this course allows students to identify their personal skills that are transferable to the work place and to describe these skills to a prospective employer. Students may be videotaped during a mock interview and will participate in the analysis of their performance in the “interview”.
