Every time you use your smartphone or join a computer network, you’re potentially exposed to numerous cyber threats such as hacking, phishing, malware, and botnets. In 2018, nearly 60% of Internet users in Canada experienced a cybersecurity incident, Statistics Canada says.
Thankfully, there are highly skilled professionals who are ready to protect us – cybersecurity specialists. Since October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, let’s explore how these digital defenders keep our information safe.
Monitoring for Threats
Cybersecurity specialists use a variety of advanced tools and tactics to spot potential attacks. For example, they can detect problems by looking closely at how devices communicate with servers and what kind of data is transmitted.
Securing Servers
Windows servers are an essential system for many organizations. It’s the job of cybersecurity specialists to keep them safe. They do this by configuring disk and file encryption, putting in place malware protection, and securing network traffic.
Testing for Weakness
In order to guard against attack, organizations must understand where they are vulnerable. Penetration testing is a key way to do this. Also known as a pen test, this is a simulated cyberattack used to evaluate system security.
Investigating Attacks
Just as a police detective must attend a physical crime scene, cybersecurity specialists are called in when there is computer-related wrongdoing. Using digital forensics techniques, a specialist can look inside company computers used to commit embezzlement, harassment, or information theft.
In-Demand Career
For all organizations, it’s clear how important it is to employ skilled cybersecurity specialists. In our globally connected world, the danger from online criminals and hackers is immense.
“Computers, servers, mobile devices, networks, and data need to be protected against malicious attacks from intruders,” says Roderick McPherson, a CDI College Technology instructor. “Cybersecurity specialists close the risk and develop strategies to prevent breaches.”
You can learn the skills you need to enter this exciting field in the Cybersecurity Specialist program at CDI College. Your courses will provide hands-on training in securing servers, penetration testing, digital forensics, and many other essential topics.
“As the world becomes more and more connected, ensuring safety, security, and data privacy will become much more important,” says Mohamed Hassan, another CDI College Technology instructor.
