Assistance in Health Care Facilities - 5816 (English)

Looking to make a positive difference in your community? CDI College's Assistance in Healthcare Facilities - 5816 program teaches students the techniques and methods they need to provide effective support to people living in residential care and other assisted living facilities.

Program Objectives 

With the help of an intervention plan, this program trains the student to provide care, assistance and services related to the needs of a patient of any age. The students also learn to welcome and integrate persons in the care unit, provide care and comfort specific to the context of the unit, that is, they adapt the basic care and services to the client’s condition as well as to the apparatus required.

Prerequisites

To be admitted to this curriculum, student must meet one of the following conditions:
  • Secondary V diploma or its recognized equivalent OR
  • Be at least 16 years old on the 30th of September of the school year and pass the third secondary units in first and second language, as well as in mathematics according to the programs established by the Minister OR
  • Be at least 18 years old when entering the program and have the following prerequisites: past a general development test and the FRA3103-1 (FRA3051-1) language test or recognition of equivalent learning.
  • Pass the College admission test.

This vocational program leads to a DEP (diplôme d'études professionnelles) recognized by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement Supérieur (MEES) (Permit 528500).

Program Courses

751-635 - Short-Term Basic Care and Services
Provide basic care and services to clients requiring short-term care. Consider the client as a whole. Have a close collaboration with the team. Demonstrate an acceptable working speed. Observe rules of professional decorum and ethics. Observe limits of the occupation, rules of hygiene, asepsis and occupational health and safety. Observe and compliance with the facility’s protocols and laws as applicable to clients. Establish a helping relationship with the client. Demonstrate appropriate choice of solutions which is adapted to situations. Demonstrate autonomy when performing tasks and accept objective and constructive criticism.
751-624 - Basic Mental Health Care and Services
Provide basic care and services to clients with mental health problems, cognitive deficits or intellectual disabilities. Consider client as a whole and keep close collaboration with the team. Observe safety rules, professional decorum and ethics. Observe hygiene and asepsis rules and respect the limits of the occupation. Comply with the facility’s protocols and laws as apply to clients. Observe the therapeutic approach recommended by the unit in the working environment. Carry out appropriate choice of solutions adapted to situations. Demonstrate of autonomy when performing tasks and accept objective and constructive criticism.
751-617 - Long-term Basic Care and Services
Provide basic care and services to clients requiring long-term care, especially clients experiencing partial to complete loss of autonomy and this is based on the care plan and instructions. Close collaboration with other care providers in the team. Observance rules of protocol and ethics and respect the limits of the occupation. Observe rules of hygiene, asepsis and occupational health and safety. Compliance with the facility’s protocols and the laws applicable to clients. Establish a helping relationship with the client. Capable of demonstrating appropriate choice of solutions adapted to situations. Demonstrate autonomy when performing tasks and accept objective and constructive criticism.
751-602 - Care Unit Procedures
Consider the patient as a whole, demonstrate effective planning of intervention. Consider the patient’s potential when providing basic care. Observe rules of hygiene, asepsis and occupational health and safety. Observe principles for moving patients safely. Capable of making choice of solutions adapted to the clinical situation. Adopt behaviors which are consistent with the protocol and values of the occupations. Proper use, maintenance and tidying up of materials, equipment and work areas. Use of appropriate vocabulary and demonstrate autonomy when performing task.
751-591 - Job Search Techniques
Learn about the steps involved in looking for a job. Become familiar with the sources of information available when looking for a job. Become familiar with the elements to be included in a resume and a cover letter. Identify the work environments that correspond to their fields of interest.
751-581 - Palliative Care
Provide assistance to clients in palliative care, Consideration of the client as a whole Respect the client's values, dignity and privacy. Recognition of the care giver’s personal and professional limits during palliative care. Compliance with care plan at the same time takes in to consideration suggestions of the multidisciplinary team.
751-572 - First Aid
Apply techniques for maintaining and restoring vital functions, Intervene in cases of hemorrhage or state of shock. Intervene in cases of musculoskeletal injury. Intervene in cases of eye injury, Cases of various wounds and problems related to heat or clod. Intervene in cases of poisoning, allergic reaction. Also intervene in cases of other medical problems in first aid.
751-568 - Basic Care Procedures
Correct application of work process, consideration of the client’s physical and emotional, condition as well as that of the environment. Observe the rules of hygiene, asepsis and safety in, the workplace. Observe the principles for moving clients safely. Adopt behaviors consistent with the protocol and values of the occupations. Proper use, maintenance and tidying up of materials, equipment and work areas. Carry out the use of appropriate vocabulary.
751-554 - Mental Health Approaches
Adopt relational approaches with clients who have mental health problems, cognitive deficits or intellectual disabilities. Observe clients; establish a relationship of trust, with clients with mental health problems. Establish a relationship of trust with clients with a cognitive deficit; also with clients with intellectual disabilities. Take action with clients in a crisis episode. Help clients achieve their full potential.
751-543 - Physical Illnesses and Disabilities
Consider the manifestations of physical illnesses and disabilities as well as the specific needs of affected clients. Observe clients with a cardio respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disease, nervous and sensory system disease. Observe clients with a digestive disease, genitourinary disease, endocrine disease, immune system disease, and choose the precautions and means to take in accordance with the situations. Help clients with physical illnesses or disabilities achieve their full potential.
751-532 - Team Interaction
Interact as part of a team, adopt attitudes that promote teamwork. Transmit verbal and written observations and report any problematic situations. Participate in team meetings; organize work so as to take into account the team as a whole.
751-522 - The Helping Relationship
Establish a relationship with the client, develop an atmosphere of trust, and communicate with the client and those around him or her. Adapt how they communicate; help the client integrate into the environment, Examine the quality of their interactions. Manifest respect for the client values ideas and opinions.
751-502 - Workplace Ethics
Adopt behaviors consistent with professional decorum and values of the occupations. Manifest openness and respect for different view points and opinions. Take in consideration critical review of reactions, behaviors and attitudes of the legal framework.
751-492 - Infections and Contamination
Prevent infections and contamination; detect the manifestations of inflammation or potential infection in situations representative of living environments, care units and home settings. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, based on data and instructions by using the necessary equipment and materials. Use documentation available on measures for prevention infection. Observance of hygiene and asepsis rules, occupational health and safely principles. Respect the laws of prevention and protocol and use appropriate vocabulary.

Adopt a holistic approach when considering the needs of different types of clientele especially In situations representative of living environments, care units and home settings.
