Demand for Nurses Grips Much of the Country

December 2, 2011 | Alberta

With an aging population and numerous advancements in healthcare technologies and practices, nurses are in high demand across the country. From Alberta to Nova Scotia, these healthcare professionals are highly sought, meaning that nursing schools could soon be overrun by students hoping to enter this field.

According to the Regina Leader Post, Alberta will need to hire more than 1,300 nursing professionals in 2012, with similar statistics commonly reported throughout other provinces. This is not a new phenomenon, as the country has been in the grips of a nursing shortage for the past 10 years.

The shortage has led some areas to actually over-hire graduates of nursing programs in order to prepare for the expected wave of retirements that analysts anticipate for the coming years.

Lynn Digney-Davis believes that the practice has been beneficial for healthcare systems and nursing grads, as it allows them to familiarize themselves with the position and provides mentorship opportunities that she believes are "helping to keep a lot of these new grads" in these jobs, reports the Post.

While the demand for nurses is high, the best way to be considered for one of these positions is by enrolling in nursing training programs. Get started on this career path today by signing up for a health care program at CDI College. Simply fill out the form on the right to begin.
