Unlike other areas of study, students enrolled in accountant courses have employment opportunities across a wealth of industries and businesses. One of the fields that's currently looking for talented accountants is the Canadian oil and gas industry, which the Vancouver Sun predicts will have substantial growth in the coming years.

Citing a recent report from the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada, the Sun reports that for a number of large projects on the horizon, notably the $7-billion Keystone XL pipeline project and the $8 billion in secured growth projects announced by Enbridge, accountants are among the myriad of positions that employers are hoping to fill in the coming years.

"It's a very stable industry, and it's one that's growing," Linda Palladino, director of human resources, administration and facilities at the Calgary-based Enbridge, Canada's largest pipeline operator, told the Sun. "We are in a major recruitment mode right now this year and next. The doors are open for great skills and people."

Accounting programs provide students with a versatile career path that could open a lot of doors for employment, not only in the oil and gas industry, but in fields from healthcare to business.
