Winnipeg staff and students use technology to raise money for Japanese relief
Winnipeg, MB - April 5, 2011 – CDI College’s Winnipeg campus is holding a unique, high-tech fundraiser to raise money for Japanese tsunami relief in conjunction with local radio station Hot 103.
On Friday April 8th, CDI College is holding Pray for Japan, an event at the campus where staff and students will sell specially produced T-shirts featuring a QR code (mobile barcode) that, when scanned with a Smartphone, will take the user directly to the Red Cross’s mobile donation page.
“We're proud to launch this innovative campaign in support of the Canadian Red Cross and its efforts to aid in the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake,” says Tahl East, Campus Director at CDI College’s Winnipeg campus. “Our school is very socially aware so we were all deeply affected by the devastation in Japan.”
The college is hoping to sell 150 of the T-shirts for $20 each, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross’s Japanese relief fund. The day-long event will also feature Japanese Taiko drummers, Japanese food and other entertainment. In addition, the college hopes that those who wear their T-shirts will encourage others to donate to the relief effort via the QR code.
“If you're wearing the shirt, you're a walking donation outlet,” East says. “This is a great way for us to reach out to the entire community at a grassroots level.”
Japanese college students are already showing their gratitude to CDI College for its fundraising efforts. Students from Japan’s Yokohama National University have made thank you videos, which can be seen on CDI College’s Facebook page.
T-shirts can be bought at the Winnipeg campus at 280 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB from 7:30 AM - 10 PM on Friday April 8, 2011.
