CDI College Laval Invites Faculty and Students to Participate in Blood Drive

September 4, 2014 | Quebec

Laval, QC – September 2, 2014 – For the 8th consecutive year, CDI College Laval will be taking part in the annual blood drive for Héma-Quebec.

According to Blood Services Canada, out of every 100 eligible Canadian donors, less than 4 donate each year. It takes at least 2 donors to help someone through a bone marrow transplant or go through brain surgery, 8 donors a week for someone going through leukemia, and 50 donors a week for victims of car accidents. With such a high demand in blood donations, the staggering 3.7% of annual donations brings Canada to a dangerous deficiency.

Nominated by the city’s mayor, Mr. Marc Demers, CDI College Laval’s Nursing instructor Mr. Charbel El Melhem was chosen to become the Good Cause Ambassador of 2014 and will be taking on a significant role in this year’s event. At a young age, Mr. El Melhem was a victim of the Lebanon civil war. If it wasn’t for the blood donations from his family, he would not have survived the injuries sustained. Having gone through a traumatic life-changing experience at such a young age, Mr. El Melhem has dedicated his time to teaching the medical sciences as well as giving back to the community.

CDI College Laval will be supporting Héma-Quebec with their goals by participating in the annual blood drive this September 5, 2014 from 8am to 8pm at Complexe Multi-Sports de Laval. As one of the most important Canadian blood drives of the year, over 500 health professionals will be assisting at the event to support Héma-Quebec’s goal of 850 donors. All faculty and staff members, employees, students, and neighbours are invited to participate in the blood drive and are encouraged to bring their friends and family along as well. Donations can also be made at Globule du Centre Laval from 4pm to 8pm.
