Computer programmers get help writing their resume

Vancouver, BC - June 2, 2010 - A well-crafted resume can help you land your ideal job as a computer programmer because it clearly highlights your accomplishments and makes you a standout in a pack of job seekers. Here are some tips for creating a well-rounded computer programmer resume:

  1. First, gather and organize the material that will go into your resume. That includes compiling a list of the hardware and software you have experience with, details about the positions you've held and other relevant information.

  2. Start by creating a heading that includes your name, address and contact information. Be sure to include an email address and a mobile telephone number if you have one.

  3. Follow up the heading with an Objective section consisting of a sentence or two that clearly spells out what sort of position you are seeking. Make this objective match the position that you are applying for.

  4. Next, create an Education section that includes where and when you went to school and the diplomas and certifications you have earned. If you’re applying for a job straight out of college, or have limited relevant experience, you will place this section ahead of any part-time or summer jobs you might have held.

  5. Create an Experience section that lists your three to five most recent positions, preferably those that involved work as a computer programmer. If you don’t have any relevant IT work experience, list your most recent jobs.

  6. For each job, indicate the skills and tasks you undertook that are most relevant to the position you are applying for. If you worked in an office as a temp, but took on occasional IT tasks, mention those.

  7. Prepare a Technical section where you will list your expertise by category, such as hardware, computer software, programming languages and so on. Be sure to indicate your level of proficiency or expertise for each.

  8. If you have won any awards for your work as a computer programmer, or as a student, create an Awards section.

  9. Conclude your resume with the line, “References available upon request.”

Finally, prepare a list of at least three references that you can quickly provide when asked. Be sure to ask your references for permission to use them as references and alert them whenever you might think they will be contacted by a prospective employer.
