CDI Rocks the Party!

At CDI College, we have real community spirit, and whether it’s a food drive, summer BBQ or spirit day to support your local sports team, we do our best to make your college experience a unique one.

“We were looking for a fun way to illustrate the journey our students take, from first day of school to new career,” said Larry Heinzlmeir, VP of Marketing. “CDI Rocks the Party symbolizes that transformation and we think it really captures the fun, energetic spirit of our campuses and shows just how awesome our students and instructors are.”

Technology Helps Detect Heart Disease

Did you know that February is Heart Month? These days, healthcare workers try to do more than just deal with the aftermath of a heart attack – they try to prevent them before they even happen.

With heart disease on the rise, scientists are turning to technology to help detect and possibly predict heart attacks. The technology is as simple as testing your blood pressure and cholesterol levels since both of these provide valuable information.

Can a heart attack be diagnosed before it happens? Patients may only display minor symptoms of a heart attack, which can often lead to misdiagnosis. Today however, healthcare professionals can analyze a patient’s blood flow to determine unusual rhythms caused by a cardiac blockage which may be early warning signs of a heart attack.

Doctors may also predict if a patient is susceptible to heart attacks. A CAT scan offers a 3D view of cardiac arteries and any blockages. It’s a step above the current internal ultrasound cameras which just scan the heart.

Find out how you can join the new generation of healthcare professionals by enrolling at CDI College.

Dental Hygiene and Heart Month

How does brushing your teeth help your heart? As part of a healthy lifestyle, regular brushing, flossing and checkups help prevent gum and tooth loss but it may also help your heart.

Some studies from the American Academy of Periodontology have shown that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), cavities and missing teeth, may predict heart disease. Why? Because systemic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes are associated with some forms of periodontitis.

So can preventing periodontal disease, with brushing and flossing prevent heart disease? Certainly if you are at risk of heart disease, do the obvious: maintain a healthy weight, eat a balance diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink water. These same tips are good for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. By keeping your mouth clean, it is hard for the bacteria that cause periodontal disease to get started. You will also reap the benefits of fewer fillings, healthier gums and a brighter smile.

Join the fight against heart disease by becoming a dental assistant. Find out how!

Massage Away Your Stress

Stress creeps up on all of us. It is one of the major contributors to illnesses such as colds, aches and injuries. A massage is a great way to relax and restore your energy.

It has physical and emotional benefits: releasing the pain and toxins out of tense muscles, helping with blood circulation, improving posture and promoting deeper breathing. Massage therapy may also help control blood pressure while boosting your immune system.

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative medicine and increasingly being offered along with standard treatments. It is good for the body and mind and a great way to reduce stress.

Together We Can Do Amazing Things

This past holiday season, staff and students across the country joined together to collect food for their local food banks. Did you know that nearly one million Canadians were helped by a food bank in 2011? That means one in every 30 people in the country have experienced a time where they were unable to afford the basic necessity of food.

We had a terrific show of holiday spirit and community support this year! So many of our staff and students pitched in, raising thousands of pounds of food, much needed monetary donations and various other charitable contributions to non-profits in their cities.

We recapped all contributions on Facebook, so be sure to check it out! Thank you to everyone for your donations and support – together, we really can do amazing things!
