Halloween Arrives at CDI College

As fall settles in, one thing we can all look forward to is Halloween. With the costumes, parties and treats, it doesn't matter how old we are, the end of October marks a time that we can all let loose and have a good time.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. CDI College is showing their support throughout the month with various fundraisers and projects like Bras for a Cause and the Run for the Cure. Here are some quick facts on why you should get involved during Breast Cancer Awareness Month too.

  • An estimated 23,200 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die from it.

  • An estimated 180 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it.

  • On average, 445 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every week.

  • On average, 100 Canadian women will die of breast cancer every week.

Reading those statistics, it's easy to feel a bit discouraged, but there is good news. With the increased awareness of breast cancer during October and the ripple effect it will have, there will be more early detections and therefore less death. Part of the awareness efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is fundraising for research, and every day we get closer to finding a cure.

Head over to Facebook to check out what CDI College is up to for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Bras for a Cause

CDI College is once again supporting the fight against breast cancer this October by flying a string of bras across Main Street. This unique and eye catching effort was designed to raise awareness for breast cancer and saw thousands of bras hung from lamp posts in the downtown core.

Campus Director, Tahl East said, "As a college that supports our community, we want to let everyone know about the importance of breast cancer research this October."

At CDI College in Winnipeg, October is a time to wear pink and show your support. This will be the third year that CDI College has been supporting this worthwhile cause.

On October 1, 2010, CDI College received help from Manitoba Hydro to string thousands of donated bras along Main Street. The effort drew the attention of radio and TV stations around the province and praise from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tuition Financing Options

Perhaps one of the biggest hurdles for adult learners is finding the time and money for college. Here are some tips and ideas on how to find the money for college.

  • If you are currently working, you may be able to talk to your employer about some much needed help in financing your education. Many companies, even small ones, benefit from you taking courses.
  • Look for college scholarships geared toward working professionals and adult learners. Some scholarships provide funds, help with child-care or both and may be employer related.
  • Another avenue for funding your education is to look at funds available to you, such as your RRSPs. You can withdraw money for financing your education under the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP)

Brain Food – Stay Alert in Class

As busy students on the go, it is imperative that those quick snacks that we grab are healthy snacks, not only for our bodies, but for our minds as well. Here are a few brain foods that assist students in keeping their minds alert, energized and of course, healthy.

Blueberries - Proven to protect the brain from oxidative stress which can prevent Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Studies have shown that a cup of blueberries a day, in any form whether frozen, fresh or freeze-dried, can improve learning capacity and motor skills.

Mixed Nuts - Peanuts, walnuts and pecans contain elements that help fight insomnia and assist in mental clarity and maintaining a strong memory. Walnuts are especially rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and almonds have natural mood-enhancing neurotransmitters.
