More than one way for adult learners to get money for college

Calgary, AB - September 13, 2010 - Perhaps one of the biggest hurdles for adult learners is finding the time and money for college. Here are some tips and ideas on how to find the money for college.

Financing Your Education with Employer Help

If you are currently working, you may be able to talk to your employer about some much needed help in financing your education. Many companies, even small ones, benefit from you taking courses. Show your boss how courses at CDI can benefit their company in the long run, and then propose they pay for some or all of your tuition.

College Scholarship Money

Look for college scholarships geared toward working professionals and adult learners. Some scholarships provide funds, help with child-care or both and may be employer related. Wal-Mart offers college scholarship money to non-traditional students employed in their stores. Credit Union BC offers college scholarships to its members, including adult learners. CDI also offers students assistance with finding scholarships.

College Savings Plans

Another avenue for funding your education is to look at funds available to you, such as your RRSPs. You can withdraw money for financing your education under the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP).  Also, most financial institutions now have low interest loans geared to adult learners, with interest-only payments while you are in school. Turn to your bank or credit union for advice on ways they can help you with college savings plans.

Extra Money for School

Finally, a part-time job while attending school is a great way to supplement your income while gaining valuable experience. With some careful planning and insightful advice you can earn extra money for school and make an investment in your career.
