Give yourself a jumpstart when studying with these snacks that promote a healthy brain

Vancouver, BC - October 13, 2010 - As busy students on the go, it's imperative that those quick snacks you grab are healthy snacks, not only for your body, but for your mind as well. Here are a few brain foods that will help keep your mind alert, energized and of course, healthy.

Brain Food

Just an ounce a day of nuts and seeds, whether in unhydrogenated peanut butters, raw or toasted, promote a healthier brain. Mixed nuts such as peanuts, walnuts and pecans contain elements that help fight insomnia and assist in mental clarity and maintaining a strong memory. Walnuts are especially rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and almonds have natural mood-enhancing neurotransmitters making them a terrific brain food to turn to in class.

Flax seeds are great for healthy brains as well because they contain ALA, a healthy fat that helps the portion of the brain that processes sensory information to function better.

Memory Food

Whether you're studying for a nursing exam or just trying to retain all that vocabulary in your paralegal courses, these foods will help build your memory.

Blueberries - Proven to protect the brain from oxidative stress which can prevent Alzheimer's disease or dementia, blueberries are a great memory food. Studies have shown that a cup of blueberries a day, in any form whether frozen, fresh or freeze-dried, can improve learning capacity and motor skills.

Chocolate - May the most popular memory food of all (in moderation, of course). The antioxidants in dark chocolate improve focus and concentration and milk chocolate improves memory.

So, next time you need a quick snack, keep your brain healthy and sharp and grab something that's good for your brain.
